2000-01-24 09:32:25 Saw two count 'em two movies right in a row this weekend. nothing like spending the whole day hiding in the movie theatre. firstly, titus was every bit as amazing as i thought it would be. it was SO visually striking; i'm trying to think of an equivalent, something to relate it to, but i just can't. it's like, remember when you were in junior high or whatever and the first time you saw brazil? you were like: wow. it's was like that times a googleplex. julie taymor is the world's biggest goddess. she creates an entire world and not one thing, not one damn thing, from the color of the grass, to the shape of the silverware, to the way a skirt hangs, is out of place or just "there." *everything* is intentional and amazing. and while i was expecting it to be disturbing, it exceeding my expectations. it was actually really quite horrifying in parts, and i was sure i would have nightmares, and i was really thankful for that. i mean, finally some art that makes an impact. movies are very really art, no matter how much we try to kid ourselves. titus is art. it's totally visually disturbing, and more importantly, it's moral . to me, art is art at its finest when it makes you want to think about how you live your life. so that's titus for you. very amazing and please go see it. also i saw topsy turvy, which i hated. i'm not a lover of gilbert & sullivan, which didn't help. but it's mike leigh goes through all this trouble to create all these interesting characters, and then instead of learning more about them, and learning more about the context of victorian london, and the setting for this really kind of awful colonialist interpretation of japanese culture (duh), instead of THAT you get mostly filmed performance of the mikado. and keep in mind the movies is almost 3 hours long. i'd say at least 50% of was just staged scenes. and it was so GOOD when the movie focused on the rehearsals; the things happening off the stage were so much more interesting then the things happening on stage, and the movie didn't give any of it up. no fun. don't see. crappy. that is all for now. k thank you very much & credits music: |
