2003-11-30 11:50 a.m. Q: Are you ready? Are you comfortable? A: Is this the interview? Q: Not yet. Once you say you're comfortable, we'll start the interview. A: Okay. I'm okay. Q: So let's start with your childhood in-- A: But I've been feeling little earthquakes all day. Have you felt any of them? Q: A: Little earthquakes and I don't know if it's just me or not. Are my legs just wiggling under me? There wasn't anyone around to ask if they felt it so I don't know. Maybe this building's going to fall down. Q: I didn't feel anything. A: Well, you just got here. Q: So you grew up in which part of Wisconsin? A: Just outside Waukesha. A pretty big town for that state, but not one of the biggest. Oh, no. Q: And when was it that you moved-- A: Could be a stroke, too, maybe. Q: What could? A: The earthquakes. Q: Well, we do get earthquakes out here. A: Uh-huh. The batteries of the tape recorder died. The subject of the interview died. There were earthquakes later, but there weren't any on the day in question. These are simple declarative sentences. They lend the appearance of truth. Is it any wonder nobody ever visits? If your grandparents appeared to be the same age as you-- If you could in fact hang out with them, the doorbell on your apartment ringing and ta-daa!! it's grandma and grandpa as teenagers and they're looking to be entertained, what could you do? They like the flavor of licorice. They're already smoking and you never did. Your grandfather wants to talk about sports and you have a large DVD collection. Helpful hints: pour glasses of ice water, make them use coasters on the wooden furniture. Polite conversation can include the following topics: education, occupation, aspiration, respiration. Try not to wig out. A good host does not wig out. If the earth shakes and the roof collapses, comment on it like you would the weather and put pretzels into bowls for sharing. They've traveled a long way and so will you, like it or not. |
