2000-05-22 15:21:52 friday night was sooooooooooooper fun. me and jo-e and mizp went to a highschool battle of the bands type thing. well, not actually a battle, I guess what we saw were the bands who actually won. it was for a benefit for renewal house, a battered women's shelter. so, good cause. anyway. the kids! it was in a church basement, which you love, first of all. also it was in Needham. Note to self: Need ham. okay! so we weren't the oldest people there, because there were like 2 parents there. so other than that we were ancient and all the kids gave us the once over when we walked in. anyways. sooo much fun to watch the kids. how they interact. the girls checking the door every 20 seconds to see who's coming in. all the girls sitting on tables and watching the boys, who were kinda dancing and spazzing out and being tough and stuff. actually some of the boys (2) were really good breakdancers. who else is glad that breakdancing is back? hands? ok. and only one girl danced. she was wearing pvc pants and carried herself pretty self-assuredly, gesticulated wildly whenever she spoke. all the boys wanted to hug her. brassy, I guess I'd call her. brassy. but anyways, you could see it irritated & made the other girls, at least some of them, feel uncomfortable. but it just seemed like she was more comfortable with herself? i don't know. there was this other girl, alterna-punky, I guess she was trying to dress all sexy, but the high school version of sexy is more sad and endearing then anything else. but she looked soooo uncomfortable with herself. with her body. like she was trying something she wasn't ready for, which is the story of high school. anyways, i'm projecting tons of my own stuff on these kids, but what else am I supposed to do. I took some pictures. and the bands. we saw two of the three bands. first of all I'd like to say that when I was in high school, all the bands, including mine (Free Meal, The Patty Burke Band, and Horton Hears a Who. ahhh, highschool bands names. VOMIT) were ALL covers bands. everyone's band in high school just played covers. but the kids these days, they have their act together, I'll tell you what. anyways. the first band was jammy, maybe phish-influenced I guess? solos, wierd song structures. pretty cool. they were so young though! little boys! and there was all the painful between song banter. they were flailing between songs. it was painful. but they were great when they were playing. there was the micromanagine keyboardist who totally fretted about every being in tune and not sucking and keeping things moving. he'll probably end up in some piano bar after highschool. and the saxaphonist who was just there to party and have fun and will join a fraternity in college and then be a lawyer. and there was the rhythm guitarist, who wasn't very good, but was handsome and people like him and he probably gets them all their gigs even if he can't tune his own guitar. every high school band has one of those. and the other guitarist was some total hot shot. hot doggin up and down and around. he knew all the guitar gymnastics. hammer-ons(!). sweep-picking. every little thing. (yes I'm a dork for knowing about those things. what can i say). anyways. it was wierd. I mean, really cool that he's so talented. but he did a guitar solo. like with no one else playing. that was kinda wierd. kinda inappropriate. I mean, cool, he's good. but who wants to see that? I think if I was one of the kids there I would have been like "please shut that kid up." the other band was some sort of heavyish band, they were college freshmen, returning from school to play in front of the high schoolers, and totally milking their big rockstar status. soooooo lame. not that talented. definitely not all that. they were weak. and there's something kind of scary about all these white boys in these heavy metal bands, acting all ragey and mad. when chances probably are they've had to deal with little hardship or struggle in their lives. but rage and anger are the only acceptable emotions for young men to display in public, right? ugh. lame. and no i don't like korn or limp bizkit either. not that there's anything wrong with being angry. heck no. and at least, if they *are* (which they're not, it's mostly just part of the act, the scene) it's a creative outlet for anger, so that's a plus. it's just cultural currency though. it's shorthand. having an angry frontman helps the kids place your band in their cognitive schema easier. which translates to bigger following, sales, etc. anyways tangent. but another funny highschool moment that happened was when we were walking out to the parking lot we saw some car full of teenagers back up RIGHT into our car. we saw it and heard it. AND plus there happened to be a cop there. I think he gave the little driver lady a little scare, but he was cool. there was no damage. she was 16. I backed into a million things when I was 16. k this soundtrack for today is going to be: Rufus & Chaka Khan, Dazz Band, & Evelyn Champagne King. So come on. thank you very much & credits music: |
