2000-05-02 10:40:52 went to the millenium march this weekend. just got back. not sure I have the words to describe the experience, besides intense, emotional, fun, sad, important, inspiring. it was SO many people. it was unbelievable. but it was a peaceful, positive crowd. 750k, i guess is the count. it went on and on, and it felt really Safe. that's the thing. I cried pretty much all weekend, it feels like. I also saw my brother for the first time in forever, so that was incredible. plus sunday was the 10th anniversary of my mom's survival of breast cancer. so it was an emotional weekend, to say the very least. but in a good way. when we were watching the march, and there were protesters (just a handful, they were nothing, really) holding up their god hates fags signs, and then the PFLAG groups started coming, and they went on forever. all the parents and their children, smiling and proud of each other. it was like everything, every second of the whole day was so important. my favorite speakers were the high school kids, there were 2 girls from salt lake city and one boy from massachusetts, the captain of his football team. their stories were amazing, and they were such good speakers because they didn't get caught up in the politician-yness of it all like some people (wilson cruz) did. they just spoke the Truth, which is always the most interesting to hear. and really the most amazing thing was that yesterday, the day after the march, we drove back to boston from dc, and all along the way a car with a rainbow sticker would pass and they'd honk or we'd honk back, or someone in the car would hold up the free issue of the advocate that's we all gotten there. it happend in maryland, and in delware, and a lot in new jersey, and even in connecticut. all the way up the coast, all the way home. like we knew we'd all come from the same place, and we were all moving in the same direction. I'll try to tell you more later, diary. |
