2003-09-20 11:40 p.m. The best thing about the robots is that they're social. I have a brown bag lunch and every day just have to leave the office almost in tears. I wish I could bring a bottle of wine and spend lunch drinking from a glass with a stem I can cradle in my hands and watch the robots in the park. They're across the street from the museum, by where the fountain is. When the weather gets hot lots of people have lunch there, just like me. People take off their shirts and lay in the shade and kids put their feet in the fountain. Some of them play chess with the robots, others bring instruments from home and they just jam. Robots know where to find buckets and sometimes they make bucket drum sets. If they made paper bags bigger I could have lunch with them and a bottle of wine and then maybe when I went back to work I wouldn't feel like crying so much. I bet robots know lots of jokes and would like to share a bottle of wine. The wine I've been getting recently is Alice White wine, which is from Australia. The robots don't see much Australian wine and this stuff is the best because on the label, it tells stories about Alice White and her exploring the Australian outback. One time, a kangaroo got really mad at her and she spent the whole story on the bottle running away from it. She crossed a river and got away. Another story that the bottle had was that Alice White had to bake a cake for her grandmother. They described the sound the eggs make when they cracked on the lip of the mixing bowl. They described it so well there wasn't room for anymore story on the bottle, but I didn't mind. I was already drunk. You know what else is great about robots. They let you win if you arm-wrestle them. Serious. Little kids with wet feet from the fountain lay on the ground next to a robot and put elbows down, hands open. And the robots let 'em win each time. I don't like my job very much but the weather is warm and looks like it's going to stay warm. The fountain and the robots are all I need to get through. I don't have to drink. I can drink in the sight of little wet footprints on the concrete, drying and shrinking, drying and shrinking. |
